Medea gets a Forever Home with Gigi from Austria

Kitten Medea

In Greek mythology, Medea is the granddaughter of the sun god Helios and best known from Euripide’s tragedy (called Medea). She was also in the myth of Jason and the Argonautica from around 700 BCE. In the myth, Medea plays the archetypal role of helper-maiden, aiding Jason by using her magic to save his life out of love.

Here, YT Creator Gigi in Austria tells us about her new kitten Medea:

When our beloved cats Nikki and Kathi went over the rainbow bridge earlier this year, I was devastated. But soon I realized that we cannot live without a cat and started looking at the websites of our two local shelters. I loved the photo of one particular cat, but she was described as shy and timid. I went to the shelter to see her.

In the cage for cats in the shelter were around six cats, five enjoying me as a visitor, one hiding – it was Medea. I was playing with the other cats and then I tried to touch her with the toy. She was showing some signs that she wanted the toy too; She put her head and one paw out of the box, but the other cats jumped up to me and Medea (she had another name there) quickly hid again.

But I saw that she looked at me without fear. This made me curious about this poor being.

When I  back home I was thinking about the situation in the shelter: Seven cats in a small room. I thought she might fear the other cats, most of which were tom-cats.

Medea was very shy at the shelter

I went there again and asked the staff to give me this cat in a separate room. The staff person told me that nobody can touch her. However, they took the other cats away. When I was alone with her, she came out, played with me and – I could touch her! I called the staff person and she said she’d never seen this before!

Medea enjoying the view
A gentle nip on the toes from Medea mean "I'm hungry."

I went home again thinking about whether to adopt her. Two days later, I went to get her.

Medea  seems that she is happy to live alone. She is a very charming and good cat, NOT shy at all! She is happy now to get 3 good meals, that she is living now in a very big apartment and a big loggia (balcony with roof and walls at the side), she does not show any signs that she would get out when she is on the loggia watching the birds in the trees.

A funny habit is that she loves to bite softly into my toe nails, which are painted red, I found out that this means “mom, I am hungry”

Medea does not scratch on the furniture, does not throw down things, not begging for human food – we are happy now! But Nikki and Kathi are still in our hearts (and in photos on our walls).

Medea found her perfect forever home
