🎬 Our Catio Home: Featured Cat Video Channel

Uli invited our USA friends from the Our Catio Home Channel to be a Featured Cat Video Channel!

A catio is an outdoor enclosure for cats, and today we are delighted to welcome the Catio Queen herself, Nala from the “Our Catio Home” YouTube channel. Nala’s mission is to help anyone who wants to learn about or create a catio home. The channel beautifully demonstrates DIY ideas and the cats running and playing in their gorgeous catio utopia.

MY: Hi Nala! Tell us about your YT cat channel!

N: As a self-described Catio Keeper, we decided to share everything that we know about designing and maintaining a successful Catio Home! We are not builders, in fact, I am a nurse, who learned how to use power tools and woodworking, just to create our catio project. Over the years, we have made one of the largest DIY catios around. We started this project while looking for ways to keep our cats safe from cars and coyotes.

Until our channel, finding detailed catio information was not exclusive to one channel. We changed that so that anyone who wants to build a catio can find one place to make it happen. Currently, we are the only 100% catio DIY Catio ideas from building, to design and every element in between. There is more to build and do at Our Catio Home.

MY: It’s so inspiring that you learned how to create your own catio from scratch and are now sharing your knowledge with others. What advice to you give to those who want to build their first catio?

N: Start with a location that offers privacy, shade and interest. Think like your cat and add elements that they like.

Be sure to include hiding places, perches, nontoxic plants, a litter box, and something for exercise. Our cats expect us to visit them and often, so make a spot for humans too. Think of a catio project as an extension of outdoor life, just condensed and exciting. Finally, the catio should look beautiful, both to you and to your cats.

MY: Your yard and catio are simply lovely, and are a true paradise for any cat lover. Tell us, when did you first fall in love with cats, and what was it that made you fall in love with them?

N: I suppose that cats have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Those 4 paws and whiskers make for an adorable little friend to care for.

MY: And who are the pawed and whiskered fur babies in your life today?

N: All of our cats are shelter cats, currently we have 2 seniors and 2 cat teens. Simon is the Siamese, Grayson is the gray one, Sabrina is black and white, and Sheldon is solid black, and Abby is our kitten siamese mix.

MY: I love watching your cats enjoy the catio. Your photography and videography are terrific! Do you have a tip for our viewers who would like to take videos of their cats?

N: I often bring the cellphone camera when I am visiting the cats inside the catio; you never know what they might do. Our cats are most active mid-morning, so they will be more inclined to climb, run, or explore that new object.

Tip: Always be aware of what your camera sees; move the camera in interesting ways, track the cats and be sure to get on their level.
