Dear Human,
Ginger here! Recently, my humans took me to the “Cat Fanciers of Hawai’i” cat show in Honolulu, HI. Usually outside cats aren’t allowed to attend cat shows, but hey, I’m a member of the “Press.”
The show was super fun. Separate contests were presented on four stages. Between shows, I was able to scamper around the aisles and visit the cats waiting their turn on the stage.
What Happens at a Cat Show?
During a cat show, felines compete to win ribbons and titles. For cats who are pedigreed, judges evaluate them based on the standards for their breed. Some shows also have contests for companion (house) cats like me. In this case, judges evaluate cats based on their temperament.
Cat show attendees are able to walk around and visit the cats who are waiting to be shown. Parents of human children: Why did I need to remind you to keep your little ones from feeding feathers to the cats? Don’t bother the cats!
The 2024 Cat Show
Watch the cat show in action on this video.
The theme of the 2024 Cat Fanciers of Hawai’i show was “The 80’s.” Sure enough, many humans and cat cages were dressed in 1980’s-style bright colors, bold patterns, and leggings.
Housed in white luxury, beautiful cats David Bowie and Shiela E. (shown in the photo at the top of this article) stood out in sparkling contrast, but still fit right in to the fun 1980’s vibe.
Cat Costume Contest
The costume contest was a fun highlight of the show. The contest drew some amazing outfits, including “Ken” from the Barbie movie. The cats tolerated their costume, although hats tended to slide off now and then.
Hachi cat took first place in the contest, dressed as Waldo of “Finding Waldo” fame. His round glasses and knit hat were adorable (see photo). Taking second place was Athena as “hip hop girl,” and third place was Mele as “80’s girl.”
