Melocat: Featured Cat Video Channel šŸŽ¬

Melocat has lots of tricks to make space in her small apartment for her ten cats.

Uli invited Hong Kong-based Melocat to be a Featured Cat Video Channel!

Do you know what a Cat Lifestylist is? Need to “catifyyour home? Meet Melocat! Melocat lives in a tiny Hong Kong apartment with her ten adopted rescue cats. Her videos highlight a ton of cat lifestyle tips and tricks that she has learned to make her home ultra-cat-friendly. Her creative hacks include maximizing the vertical space in her apartment to make the place a kitty paradise. Sheā€™s also created a system to make it easy for one person to care for ten cats.

Ā

In addition to cat lifestyle hacks, some of Melocatā€™s videos show encounters with animals she meets while out and about in Hong Kong (AKA ā€œshop catsā€ that actually live and work in shops). Other videos focus on animal adoption, rescue, travel, and more generally, helping to spread the word about animals in need.

MY: Melocat, welcome to our website! Your apartment is a kitty paradise! Can you share a recent tip that made your apartment even more cat friendly?

Ā

M: For my cats to be at total ease, I use the right tool for the job and optimize my daily workflow (Did I say that I can clip nails and feed medicine to DingDing- a cat I canā€™t hold?). For example, I used some wooden crates and flip them on the side for two purposes: I can mount them on the wall for a nice cat ariel cat house (modified the crate a bit).

Also, I put water dishes inside the crate to protect the cats from injury in case they fall from the cat tree onto the ceramic/ glass water dish. Space is an issue in Hong Kong, so everything can be right next to each other sometimes. In this case, the cats can be protected from the water dishes close to the vertical cat tree.

Ā

MY: The crates are a great idea, sturdy and just the right size. Tell us, which piece of cat furniture currently seems to be a favorite of your cats?

Ā

M: Definitely the vertical wall poles (and no need to drill into walls). I found ones that are super sturdy and now I have four, so the cats can climb up and down just like in the wild!Ā  But have to be careful in case they fall (they do sometimes), that whatever underneath isnā€™t sharp or have sharp corners. So, here too, I use a crate to protect the cats from injury.

MY: Will you tell us about a funny habit or special skill of your cats?

Ā

M: My cats are not scared of going to the vet, in fact the vet is a fun place where they go to play and eat treats while the vet draws blood! Most of them can be taken outside on a pet sling and harness.Ā  This all started since Burrito (my cat from Malaysia) got here. Burrito suffered a chronic wound early in life and saw frequent vets at a young age, so it was normal to him.Ā  Perhaps he gave my other cats the briefing that the vet is a great place to hang out~. Just kidding! Actually I associated the vet with happy things, so he picked up on it and just convinced my cats.

Ā

MY:Ā Associating the vet with treats is aĀ fantasticĀ idea! You have great ideas about how makeĀ everything cat-friendly. Would you say that Hong Kong is more cat-friendly compared to other places you have lived in the past?

Ā

M: Although the animal welfare laws can use more work, if you look closely you see that our street cats are very well fed, clean and mostly desexed.Ā  The best part is that you often see what we call ā€œshop catsā€, who live in shops and even restaurants (the front end, not kitchen) sometimes and they greet customers and creates an environment where people can actually have a conversation with one another coz of the cat. (In Asia we tend to be a bit more conservative so talking to strangers isnā€™t as common.)

Melocat's vertical furniture: The vertical pole is a kitty favorite.

MY: It must be a lot of work to take care of ten cats! How do you do it?

Ā

M:Ā Before, I had two, and the house was a mess already! Once I had integrated my cats into my lifestyle completely, two or ten makes little difference, and they donā€™t fight at all.Ā  And this is not by coincidence; itā€™s because their living environment is optimized for them to thrive as opposed to a hideout of sorts.Ā

Ā

MY: Thank you so much for sharing yourĀ catificationĀ expertise with us, Melocat. We love your innovative and creative videos.Ā  Where can readers go to learn more about you and your cat lifestylist ideas?

Ā

M: Iā€™m the most active on Youtube, where I post daily videos, you can also follow me on IG, Facebook and Reddit to see a different side of the channel other than my videos on Youtube.
