🏆 Cat Person of the Month: Mollie Hunt

Mollie Hunt, Author

Today we are pleased to speak with our Cat Person of the Month for August, award-winning author Mollie Hunt!

Mollie lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and cats. Her many written works include two cozy cat series, a cat sci-fantasy tetralogy, and even a bit of cat poetry. One of Mollie’s wonderful series is the “Crazy Cat Lady Cozy Mysteries.” The book series features retiree Lynley Cannon, who shares her Portland home with a myriad of rescue cats. The first book of the series, Cats’ Eyes, begins with Lynley’s elderly cat Fluffs dragging home a beach stone that turns out to be a priceless diamond! Sounds like fun reading, right?

MY: Mollie, we are honored to have you! Welcome to our website and tell us about your latest work.

MH: Actually, Mewla, I’m currently working on six books! Cat’s Play, my next Crazy Cat Lady mystery and Ghost Caton the Midway, the Tenth Life paranormal mystery #2 will be published this fall.

I recently issued an episodic story on the new Kindle Vella called Catwoman-a Journey. My memoir of how cats helped me through the pandemic is sitting with an agent. I’m afraid Cat Autumn, the third book in the Cat Seasons sci-fantasy tetralogy, has been put on the back burner, but once the others are complete, I’ll get to it.

Oh, and I just started the first draft of Cat House, Crazy Cat Lady #10. I’ll do anything to avoid washing floors!

MY:  Well, I’m glad your priorities are in the right place. Those floors can wait, right? We are much more impressed that you have so many books in progress. Can you tell everyone about the role of some of the cats in your books?

MH:  I have fun with the cats in the Crazy Cat Lady series. Since the series centers on a shelter volunteer, there are many opportunities for cats and cat tales. My new paranormal Tenth Life series features a ghost cat who is both naughty and nice. In the sci-fantasies, the cats save the world, because, well, somebody’s got to do it, right? I’ve also memorialized many of my angel kitties (cats who have passed) by keeping them alive in my stories.

MY:  Aww. Your cats will be famous forever. And the cats have very different personalities and adventures, as only could be written by someone who knows cats very well.  When did you first fall in love with cats, and what was it that made you fall in love with them?

MH: I have loved cats ever since I can remember. When I was little, I decided to marry our Maine Coon boy Two. I suffered from an anxiety disorder when I was a child, and cats were my solace. Sometimes I pretended I was a cat.

I think my first big draw to cats was their softness. Who doesn’t feel better when petting a cat? It’s proven that petting cats can lower blood pressure, you know. The more I learned about cats, the more I loved them, and that is still true today.

“Crazy Cat Lady Cozy" Mysteries

MY: Cats provide comfort to so many people, I know my blood pressure and anxiety level decrease just seeing a photo of a cat, let alone snuggling with one. Tell us, who are the cats in your life today?

MH: I have two cats living with me currently: Tyler, a nineteen-year-old tabby who still plays like a kitten, and Jaimz, a tiny senior boy with health issues. Both were adopted from the Oregon Humane Society where I volunteer. I also foster for OHS. My most recent foster was Popeye, a young kitty with a broken arm.

MY: Can you share about the work you do at the shelter?

MH: I have been volunteering at OHS for many years and done many jobs including socializing cats, training new volunteers, and helping with adoptions. Since the pandemic, I’ve mostly been fostering sick cats in my home.

MY: Shelters are always looking for volunteers, so thank you for all the good you do for cats, Mollie. I think our visitors are going to need to buy your books right away!  Where can readers go to find out more about your books and next projects?

MH: It’s easy! Just go to my Amazon page and look for the book you are interested in. You can buy signed paperbacks from me directly. (See my Facebook page for instructions.) If you are in Portland, Oregon, they are also available at Gifty Kitty, a wonderful cat-themed gift and art store.
