1. December is National Cat Lover’s Month.

Are you a cat lover? Then December is your month! National Cat Lover’s Month was created for people who “honor the beauty, smarts, and sass of our feline friends.”[1]

How do you celebrate, you ask? Any way you want to!

2. December 1 is Shelter Pets Day

Humans are seven times more likely to adopt a pet from a shelter if they know someone else who has. [2] Here’s how you can be that someone!

American Humane knows that cats make great companions because they can sense when their humans need comfort. [1] Do you have loved ones in your life who could use the support of a cat? Shelter Pets Day was created to get the friends and families of people who have adopted pets to adopt a pet, too.

Be a great son, sister, parent, cousin, or friend while saving the life of a pet! Talk to your loved ones about bringing home their own purrfect pet from the shelter, too. Learn more at [3].

3. December 9 is the International Day of Veterinary Medicine.

December 9 is the International Day of Veterinary Medicine.[4] We love our Veterinarians. They work hard to save animals’ lives and keep our pets healthy. Being a veterinarian takes years of training and tremendous emotional strength, especially when vets have to help humans cope with the loss of their beloved pets. Currently, there aren’t enough vets to meet the demand for animal care, and many are overworked. On the International Day of Veterinary Medicine, take time to thank your favorite veterinarian.

4. December 10 is International Animal Rights Day.

International Animal Rights Day is celebrated on the same day as International Human Rights Day.[5]

Some people don’t care that animals have feelings and can suffer just like humans can. Industry farming and some testing laboratories force animals to live in inhumane conditions. The animal-ethics.org was created to help defend animals’ ethical and legal rights to be treated humanely.[5] Neither humans nor non-human animals should be forced to suffer.

Take time to learn how you can help defend animals and start by spreading the word that December 10 is International Animal Rights Day!

5. December 15 is National Cat Herders Day.

TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) organizations need volunteers to help herd community cats—the stray and feral felines you may see wandering in your neighborhood. [8, 9]

TNR is the best way to prevent cat overpopulation, and in turn, helps prevent ridiculously high rates of kittens being euthanized. When cats are neutered/spayed and returned to their communities, they can live healthy lives without contributing to cat overpopulation. [8, 9]

Organizations are available to help! Community Cats offers live, monthly classes to help you herd the homeless cats in your neighborhood. 6. December 25 is Catmas.

On Catmas, which falls on the same day as Christmas, cats all over the world should be having fun playing with shiny ribbons, crunching wrapping paper, climbing Catmas trees, napping in new gift boxes, and cuddling with their favorite human. Let the fun begin!
