What Cat Holidays are in March?

1. March 2: International Rescue Cat Day. International Rescue Cat Day is observed annually on March 2nd to create opportunities for humans to adopt a cat.[1] Many cats out live in shelters and are just waiting for a home, so remember to check the shelters when you decide to adopt a new cat.

The USA has thousands of commercial pet breeders and backyard breeders producing millions of animals using cruel practices. Commonly known as puppy and kitten mills, the mills are abusive factories that force poor female animals to spend their lives in cages, birthing one litter after another. Don’t support kitten mills.[1] Adopt a rescue cat and you will provide a home to an animal who is truly in need. (Read more at Buying A Cat).

2. March 3: What if Cats and Dogs had Opposable Thumbs Day. This is a day for humans to ponder what would happen if our cats and dogs possessed prehensile digits.[2] What if your cat could open cabinet doors and use a can opener? How about if she could send text messages on your cell phone? Consider the possibilities!

3. March 3: International Tripawd Awareness Day.  Founded in 2022, March 3 also honors three-legged pets and the people who care for them.[3] “Triday,” is the official International Tripawd Awareness Day to raise awareness about limb amputation for our pets. Limb amputation is sometimes the best way to improve the quality of life for animals affected by limb cancers, congenital challenges, or injury.[3]

4. March 17: Saint Gertrude of Nivelles Day— Patron Saint of Cats. Saint Gertrude of Nivelles Day is observed on March 17, along with Saint Patrick’s Day. Saint Gertrude was an abbess born around the year 626 in what is present-day Belgium.[4]

In addition to being the Patron Saint of cats, Saint Gertrude is also the the Patron Saint of travelers, gardeners, widows, recently deceased souls, souls in purgatory, and rodents (so, rodents can pray to Saint Gertrude for safety when being chased by a cat, lol).

5. March 20-26: National Animal Poison Prevention Week: This holiday is held the third week of March to coincide with National Poison Prevention Week.[5] See more below.

6. March 23: Cuddly Kitten Day. March 23rd is Cuddly Kitten Day![6] While any day is a great day for cuddling kittens, this is a day to show some extra attention to a cuddly kitty.

7. March, and March 28: Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month and Day. March 28 is Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Day and March is National Pet Poison Prevention Month.[5] It’s a good time to read up on the dangers of accidental pet poisonings and how to prevent them.
