In November 2013, I went to the Humane Society thinking I was going to adopt just one kitten. But when I got there, Abby and Athena were the only two kittens left of their litter. I didn’t want them to be separated and it also would have been impossible to choose which one to adopt, so instead I adopted both of them.
The Humane Society had their names listed as Poodle and Doodle. But when I met the staff, they told me their names were Oodle and Noodle. And then on adoption day the staff called them Snoodle and Toodle. And so in order to not get confused, I told them I was adopting the tabby, Abby the Tabby, and the gray tuxedo who I said looked like a greek goddess, Athena. And the names Abby and Athena stuck.
Then, in December 2017, a rescue organization found Cleo and Daisy clutching each other on the side of the road. The rescue didn’t have a permanent building at the time, so Cleo & Daisy were living in the rescuer’s basement.
When the two girls were brought to my house they were extremely timid. I kept them in a separate room until they were ready to be introduced to Abby and Athena. Their original names were El and Jersey. But with their new life I wanted them to have new names. El was changed to Cleo because of her beautiful eye makeup that she wears. And Jersey was changed to Daisy because the orange tip of her tail reminded me of the middle of a daisy.
At that point I thought I was at my limit of cats but sometimes life has other plans.
About 5 months later, on a gorgeous spring day, I had all the windows open and I heard a constant chirping sound, which I mistook for a bird. Hours later, I realized I was still hearing the same constant chirping. So I went outside and under the side of my house in the mulch was little Annie at only 10 days old. And so that brought me to having 5 indoor cats.
I called her that because of little orphan Annie, however I do believe I ended up finding her mother a few weeks later along with her other kittens. I will never know for sure if it was Annie’s mother but they did have the same interesting fur patterns. A rescue came to get Momma kitty and her other kittens so they could get spayed/neutered.
I’m also feeding Gray who I like to call my outdoor cat. She walked right up to me one day and meowed and let me pet her. So I started feeding her and set up a food station in my garage as well as a comfortable cat bed and some toys. There are also two feral cats that have been coming into the garage during the night hours so I always make sure to leave out extra food for them. Gray was the only one that wasn’t feral. So I would always say the gray cat is here just to differentiate between the other cats. And then Gray just stuck after that.
Cleo and Annie have the same cute habit. They both go “hunting” at night. Since they are indoor cats it’s not the typical kind of hunting. Annie hunts her favorite fish toy that she played with as a kitten. She hunts the exact same fish toy every night. Her hunt starts shortly after I get into bed. She meows at the fish and makes all sorts of adorable noises all of which I can hear from my room. Then she picks it up in her mouth and carries it upstairs and drops it next to my bed. The next morning she brings it back downstairs so she can hunt it again later that night. Cleo has a similar process but she hunts either her big pink mouse toy or a big scrunchy. Her noises are different from Annie’s so I can always tell the difference between who’s hunting.
